Writing this guide is my version of paying forward the gift that the beach glass community gave by welcoming me. Beachglassing has become my zen.
I'm sure I don't know everything about beach glass and I'm also pretty sure I'm still a noob by some people's definition. I also know that information on this hobby is a bit scarce, so please enjoy the guide and go find yourself some "pretties" as Zoey calls them.
Be forewarned, this is more a personal essay about the loss of a friend than a beach take. He was the person who introduced this beach to me back in 1999 and it was the spot I visited the day of his funeral to help me remember him as a vibrant, brilliant person. The very first ACME cake was for my oldest daughter's third birthday. She was absolutely obsessed with Finding Dory. There are dozens of little spaces on this beach where one can find different sizes, qualities and colors of glass. Starting at the eastern edge of the pier, crossing the tributary that divides this half of the beach, Bradstreet's Landing, Rocky River, Ohio and moving all the way to the eastern most point of the beach, there are piles of stones that can be sifted and searched... I love this little reptile pooper scooper. I carry it with me everywhere I go just in case. I have a "beach glassing" bucket in the trunk of my car and this is always in it. I am a writer-turned-educator who misses the joy of storytelling on my own terms. I love advising and guiding student writers, but it doesn't quite scratch my writer's itch.
So, here I am, putting up a website where I can publish some reviews, thoughts, stories about beach glass, and stories about life as a working mom with four tots.
Yeah I know, four is a lot. A lot of incredible if you ask me. These guys sure do keep me on my toes.
